Wie kann man in Berlin glücklich werden? Der englische Reiseführer How to be Happy in Berlin aus dem Jahr 1929 erklärte Besucher:innen aus aller Welt, was man dafür in dieser neuen, pulsierenden Metropole tun musste, die mit London und Paris konkurrierte. Passend zum Jubiläum der 1920er Jahre laden wir Sie mit der Ausstellung dazu ein, die Berliner Wege englischer Autor:innen wie Virginia Woolf, Christopher Isherwood und W.H. Auden zu den kosmopolitischen Cafés, den berühmten wissenschaftlichen Instituten, den Avantgarde-Kinos und den halbseidenen Kabaretts der Großstadt zu erkunden.
Am Standort im Literaturhaus Berlin werden zentrale Treffpunkte der bunten Kulturszene vorgestellt wie das Romanische Café oder das Eldorado Cabaret, wo diskutiert und geschrieben, getrunken und gefeiert wurde. Zudem können Sie mithilfe einer immersiven Soundinstallation in Christopher Isherwoods Berlin akustisch eintauchen.
Am Standort in der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin stehen neben der pleasure vor allem politics und psychoanalysis im Fokus. Hier folgen wir Virginia Woolfs Geliebten Vita Sackville-West und deren Ehemann Harold Nicolson oder Christopher Isherwoods Freund William Robson-Scott, der an der Berliner Universität von nationalsozialistischen Studenten bespitzelt wurde.
Zu sehen ist die zweisprachige Ausstellung vom 16.6. bis 31.7.2021 im Literaturhaus Berlin sowie im Foyer des Grimm-Zentrum der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

How to be happy in Berlin? An eponymous 1929 English guide told visitors from all around the world what to do in order to find happiness in this buzzing new metropolis that rivalled London and Paris. As the anniversary of the 1920s approaches, we invite you to map the presence of English writers such as Virginia Woolf, Christopher Isherwood and W.H. Auden in Berlin’s cosmopolitan cafés, famous scientific institutes, avant-garde cinemas and seedy cabarets.
Literaturhaus Berlin presents the meeting places of the lively cultural scene of the time, including Romanisches Café and Eldorado Cabaret, where British visitors held debates and wrote, drank and partied. An immersive sound installation recreates the soundscape of Isherwood’s Berlin.
At Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin the focus is on politics and psychoanalysis, as well as pleasure. Here we follow Virginia Woolf’s lover Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson, and Christopher Isherwood’s friend William Robson-Scott, who was spied upon by National Socialist students at Berlin’s university.
The exhibition is bilingual and can be visited from 16.6.–31.7.2021 at Literaturhaus Berlin and the Grimm-Zentrum Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
